Vrijheid is voor velen na de Tweede Wereldoorlog een abstract begrip geworden. We hebben sindsdien in Nederland collectieve vrijheid gekend. Op individueel niveau was die vrijheid echter nooit vanzelfsprekend. En als we kijken naar de actualiteit staat zelfs de collectieve vrijheid onder druk.

Tijdens dit programma waar de Britse auteur en historicus Keith Lowe een lezing verzorgt wordt een sterke link gelegd tussen het heden en de rol die wij zelf hebben als het om het beschermen van vrijheid gaat. Door naar het verleden te kijken kunnen we met een kritische blik naar het heden kijken. Want vrijheid is niet vanzelfsprekend, daar moeten we samen aan blijven werken. De lezing van Keith zal stof tot nadenken geven; de andere gasten en het publiek kunnen hier samen over verder praten.

Over Keith Lowe
Keith Lowe is een Britse auteur en historicus, gespecialiseerd in de geschiedenis en herinneringen aan de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Hij is lid van de Royal Historical Society en zit in de historische adviesraad van Liberation Route Europe. Zijn boeken zijn in meer dan twintig talen vertaald. Tot zijn werk behoren de internationale bestseller Savage Continent: Europe in the Aftermath of World War II en, recentelijk, Naples 1944; War, Liberation and Chaos. Hij geeft regelmatig lezingen aan universiteiten en andere instellingen aan beide zijden van de Atlantische Oceaan.

Freedom has, for many, become an abstract concept after the Second World War. Since then, we in the Netherlands have experienced collective freedom. On an individual level, however, that freedom has never been self-evident. And if we look at current events, even collective freedom is under pressure.

During this program, in which the British author and historian Keith Lowe will deliver a lecture, a strong link is made between the present and the role we ourselves play when it comes to protecting freedom. By looking at the past, we can examine the present with a critical eye. Because freedom is not something to be taken for granted; it is something we must continue to work on together.

Keith’s lecture will provide plenty of food for thought, which the other guests and the audience can then continue to discuss together.

Keith Lowe is a British author and historian, who specialises in the history and memory of the Second World War. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, and on the historical advisory board of Liberation Route Europe. His books have been translated into more than twenty languages. They include the international bestseller Savage Continent: Europe in the Aftermath of World War II, and, most recently, Naples 1944; War, Liberation and Chaos. He regularly lectures at universities and other institutions on both sides of the Atlantic.
